HOW DREAMS IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS GROWTH

Most independent Financial Advisors/Reps and entrepreneurs started their business with a Dream. The Dream made them get up early in the morning, work late at night, and take financial risks to grow their new business. But for many, the dream either died or was forgotten.
It is the Dream that creates the excitement and challenge. The Dream makes people endure the risks, challenges and failures. Let’s look at history to understand how dreams and dreamers have changed our world, and how a dream can change your world.
DREAMS AND DREAMERS HAVE CHANGED OUR WORLD!
- The Wright Brothers dared to dream that a machine could fly. The two American Pioneers, Orville and Wilbur were generally credited with inventing, building, and flying the world’s first successful airplane.
- Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman, who has been described as America’s greatest inventor. His inventions include the phonograph, the motion picture camera , and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.
- Walt Disney dreamed to create a magical amusement part where “dreams come true.” He created Disneyland.
The list can go on and on. These individuals started with a DREAM. Many people laughed at their dreams and some called them crazy. They endured years of failure and ridicule. The Wright Brothers had years of failed attempts before they finally got their airplane to fly. Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything, and he was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps. “ Walt Disney had his share of hard failures including a bankruptcy, a mental breakdown, a devastating strike, and the loss of control over his creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
But, they all have one thing in common…a DREAM. And, they NEVER gave up on their dream. It was the dream that drove them every day. It was the dream that made them get up when they fell down.
FOR THE RIGHT REASON, YOU WILL DO ANYTHING!
Let me make a bold statement: For the right reason, you will do anything! That is quite bold but, let me prove my point. I made that statement to a company in January 2017 with the CEO in the room. Now I knew him quite well and knew he was successful because of his “maverick” thinking and behavior. He proceeded to immediately stand up and say, “I do not believe you.” I then asked him if he was willing to play a game with me and he said, “sure.” Next, I asked him if he would cross a wire between the 110 floors of two tall skyscraper buildings in New York City when the wind was blowing at 60 mph. He would wear sneakers, a t-shirt, sweatpants and have no other gear. He looked at me and quickly blurted out, “NO, I would not do such a stupid thing.” Then I asked him the second question: Would he cross a wire between the 110 floors of two tall skyscraper buildings in New York City when the wind was blowing at 60 mph if he was on one building and his children were at the other building being held by a crazy person who would push his children over the edge if he did not cross? He then paused, looked at me and stated, “YES, of course I would cross. Now I understand your point.” He then sat down.
Obviously, this is a dramatic scenario but it proves my point. For the right reason you will do anything. Let’s apply this thinking to your business. What is your DREAM? Why did you decide to start your business? What drives you every day?
If you have lost your passion or forgot your dream or never had a dream, then you need to stop and think and create your Dream. Why? Because it is the fuel that will get you excited to come into the work. It is the reason why you will stand up after you fall down.
Now if you do NOT have a Dream or if you are already “living the dream,” then you need to create your new or next Dream. That is a critical element to business growth and should never be forgotten. So if you are “stuck” in business and/or not growing, ask yourself if you have a Dream that is driving you. If not, then create one. If you are already “living the dream,” then create your next Dream.
In my next e-newsletters I will help you create your DREAM, and talk about why people STOP believing in their dreams.
