Are You Using “Canned” Referral Language?

Let’s be honest—many Financial Advisors dread asking for referrals.

Maybe you’ve tried scripts that feel canned and unnatural.

Maybe you’ve practiced lines that sound too “salesy.”

Or maybe you’ve stopped asking altogether because it just feels uncomfortable.

You’re not alone—and more importantly, this can be fixed.

After coaching hundreds of Financial Advisors across the country, I’ve learned that referral success isn’t about memorizing clever phrases. It’s about building confidence, clarity, and connection. The right approach feels authentic, not forced. And when you master it, referrals stop being awkward—and start becoming natural, consistent, and qualified.

Your Language & Trust Skills:  Are you using outdated language?

If you’re still using the same referral language you learned years ago, it’s probably holding you back. Clients can feel when you’re using memorized lines—they may respond politely, but they rarely take action.

Today’s clients are more sophisticated and relationship-driven than ever before. They want to feel your mission, not just hear your words. They want to trust you and know you care.  When your relationship and language comes from your heart—when it reflects who you truly are and why you do what you do—it resonates. That’s when clients are proud to introduce you to the people they care about most.

Your Market and System:  Do you have a Referral Market Research System that clearly defines who you want to meet?

Most Advisors say they want referrals, but haven’t defined their markets and who they actually want to meet. They go into meetings and ask…Who do you know that needs my help?  And that question may lead you to “let me think about it” or I don’t know anyone.

When you don’t have clarity, you’ll keep getting referred to people who can’t afford your services or don’t fit your model. But when you know your ideal prospect—wealthy families, business owners, and/or executives, and have a Referral Market Research System that defines these individuals, then you can target and ask for them.

Imagine being referred directly to the exact type of person you want to serve. That’s not luck—that’s strategy.

Your Mindset:  Do you believe you are bad at asking for referrals

So many Advisors tell me, “I’m just not good at asking for referrals.” I always smile when I hear that—because it’s simply not true.

You’re not bad at it; you’ve just never decided to “master the skill,” and you have no Referral System.

I remember telling one of my clients, who was a one handicap golfer, that I was not good at golf.  He then asked me how many hours per week I practiced.  I laughed and told him maybe one hour per month.  He then proceeded to tell me that I needed to go to the golf range for 2 hours per day if I wanted to master this skill.   And I knew he was right.

Referral mastery is a learned skill, just like my golf—and like any high-performance skill, it requires the right coaching, tools, and practice. Once you learn how to shift your language, your mindset, and your system, everything changes.
